Our Story / Founders

Founded in 1990 by James O’Shea and the late Charles Kafferman, West Street Grill created today's modern American bistro in Connecticut, introducing high-end American cuisine to the region. James O’Shea, an Irish-born restaurateur with deep experience in New York’s culinary scene, infused the restaurant with a blend of sophistication and heartfelt hospitality. Over the past 35 years, the Grill has become a landmark in Litchfield’s culinary landscape, earning numerous accolades and continuous national recognition for its consistently excellent service.

West Street Grill embodies a philosophy of warm, inclusive hospitality paired with uncompromising culinary standards. Rooted in O’Shea’s Irish heritage, the restaurant delivers elevated yet approachable dining, where every guest feels genuinely welcomed. Location & Setting

Located in the heart of historic Litchfield, West Street Grill sits directly across from the charming Litchfield Green—offering cafe tables for outdoor seating during warmer months. French doors open to connect diners with the town’s classic New England scenery, while inside, the restaurant balances elegance and intimacy. The interior  space features a timelsss bistro atmosphere, cozy bar, warm wood tones, and striking black-and-white charcoal drawings that tell the story of its rich heritage—making it a memorable destination for both locals and luxury travelers alike.

About us

West Street Grill is a pioneer creating a style of cooking that is immensely popular today and is characterized by fresh, clean, and vibrant ingredients. We popularized this style of cooking long before it became a trend—the kitchen sources produce from local markets. Known for classic presentations like the Smoked Atlantic Salmon under a glass dome, and beloved staples like the Parmesan Aioli Peasant Bread, the restaurant blends showmanship with timeless appeal with  propritors select wine offerings.

History

Since opening in 1990, West Street Grill has transformed Connecticut’s dining world with a Mordern American kitchen and genuine hospitality. Founded by James O’Shea and Charles Kafferman, the restaurant quickly became the template for New American Dining and has lead the way in the develpoment of today's style of cooking. The emphasis being local, fresh, and simply prepared dishes using the most saught-after ingedents sourced both locally and expertly prepared.
